On Saturday, Marquette men’s lacrosse had a bad half-hour or so, and ended up taking a 14-9 loss to then-#8 Villanova. Not the worst loss in the world, of course, but Marquette was at the very end of the receiving votes department in last week’s Maverik media top 20 poll. If you’re trying to stay in the conversation for votes there, then losing like that at home isn’t really what you want.
Then again.......
Marquette’s still the very last team receiving votes in the brand new top 20 poll, so what do I know?
They’re still the very last team, which likely means that Marquette picked up a lone 20th place vote. That just seems to be the right way to think about that. Georgetown is the only team on Marquette’s schedule this season that’s joining the Golden Eagles in the RV category, as the Hoyas are the unofficial #25 team in the country right now.
MEANWHILE, the top 20 is stacked with teams that are on MU’s schedule. Denver slips one spot to #4 this week, and Duke falls a spot as well down to #6. Boy, that’ll be a fun two-game road trip to end the season. Villanova boosted up a spot to #7 in the newest poll, while Notre Dame, which will be in the Valley in nine days, falls from #7 to #12. Michigan and Robert Morris, both of whom hold wins over Marquette this season, both fell a bit this week. The Wolverines are down three spots to #18, while the Colonials finished in a tie for #19 with Harvard after being ranked #14 last week.
Marquette returns to action on Saturday when they visit St. John’s. First draw is scheduled for noon Central, with the streaming broadcast coming to you on WatchESPN.
