Marquette Volleyball Still Outside The AVCA Top 25

The Golden Eagles are inching closer to the #25 spot, though.

The AVCA released its first in-season poll of the 2018 season on Monday, and YOUR Marquette Golden Eagles...... are right where they were in the preseason poll: One spot outside the top 25.

However, while the Golden Eagles were 11 points away from a national ranking in the preseason, they are now ever so slightly closer. MU picked up 131 points, which is down from the preseason poll, but #25 Colorado State earned just 140 points. That has Marquette just nine points shy, and that’s a step forward.

As was the case in the preseason, Creighton is the only other Big East team earning votes in the poll. The Bluejays are ranked #15 in the country after going 1-2 over the opening weekend, with the win coming against then-#5 Kentucky and the losses coming against then-#10 USC and Northern Iowa, which went from unranked in the preseason poll to #17 in the country.

Those same Panthers are one of five teams on Marquette’s non-conference schedule that are either in the top 25 this week. Baylor moves up to #12 after picking up a four-set win over Marquette on Saturday. Still to come on the schedule are #7 USC, #8 Wisconsin, and #9 BYU. Those three matches will all come in an eight day stretch, but they’ll all be at the McGuire Center, with a match against Syracuse tossed in there for good measure.

Allie Barber and the Golden Eagles return to action on Friday afternoon when they take on Kansas State down in Saint Louis as part of a tournament hosted by Saint Louis University.
