Over the weekend, Marquette volleyball beat the #10 team in the country and lost to the #3 team in the country, all while ranked #25 in the country. As it turns out, that’s enough to move up a few spots in the rankings.
The AVCA released a new top 25 poll on Monday, and Marquette now finds themselves ranked as the #21 team in the country. That’s pretty neat. MU picked up 427 points, which has them much closer to #20 Kentucky (455 points) than to #22 Washington State (332 points).
Marquette wasn’t the only familiar team that moved up this week. Thanks to their 3-0 weekend in Milwaukee, BYU ascended from #3 to the new #1 team, while Creighton shifted from #14 to #10. There were some droppers on Marquette’s schedule, too. Wisconsin, which will be in Milwaukee on Friday night, dropped from #2 to #6, while USC‘s losses to Marquette and BYU sent them from #10 to a tie for 16th. Baylor beat Wisconsin, but also lost in five sets at home to UT-Rio Grande Valley, so they dropped from #15 to #18.
There are two MU non-conference foes earning votes this week but aren’t quite ranked right now. Northern Iowa stayed relevant with 23 points, while Kansas State suddenly jumped into the national picture with 10 points. None of K-State’s wins are particularly notable, but they are 8-1 with the lone loss coming against Marquette.
As mentioned above, #21 Marquette returns to action on Friday night when they host #6 Wisconsin at the McGuire Center. Tickets are limited for that game already, and trust me when I tell you it’s not because those jerk Badger fans have snapped up the seats. First serve is set for 7pm Central, and that shouldn’t be affected by the Tulsa-Illinois State match that starts at 3pm.
