Marquette Men’s Soccer Continues To Climb In The United Soccer Coaches Poll

This is wild, man.

At the start of the season, the Big East coaches voted on the likely outcome of the standings in 2018. YOUR Marquette Golden Eagles were picked to finish sixth, which was a pretty positive step for a team that went 3-11-2 last season.

Today, United Soccer Coaches released their latest top 25, and Marquette is, technically speaking, the #32 team in the country. That’s definitely a positive step.

The Golden Eagles are 2-0-0 on the still young season after outscoring their opponents 7-1. That has earned MU 22 points in the USC poll, tying them with Butler for that #32 spot. Stanford has the #25 ranking with just 88 points, so Marquette is not that far away from cracking the rankings.

Part of Marquette’s ascension in the polling after earning five points last week is the turnover in the top 25. There are TEN teams in this week’s poll that were unranked a week ago, including #8 North Carolina State, so the voters have been looking far and wide to find teams to put into their poll. That’s also how you end up with 27 teams outside the top 25 receiving at least one vote on one ballot.

There are two teams in the top 25 that are on Marquette’s schedule this season. Villanova has started 3-0-0 and ascended all the way to #15 in the country, while Georgetown is not that far behind them at #20. In addition to Butler, Marquette is joined in the receiving votes category by Creighton and Michigan, which will host Marquette next Monday night.

The Golden Eagles return to action less than 90 minutes after I type this on a road trip to face Saint Louis. They’ll be back in Milwaukee to face Penn on Friday night, with first kick set for 7pm.
