Over the summer, we put together a few stat charts for Marquette men’s and women’s basketball that we’ve been updating as each game goes by. The nature of having incredibly talented and prolific players has created a situation where the record books are nearly constantly being rewritten, and keeping track of those rewrites is fun.
Since we’ve passed the first of the year, it’s officially the part of the basketball calendar where we can start looking at single season records. Thus, we’re going to be adding to those stat charts with the single season marks and top 10s that are most in danger of changing at this point.
Let’s dig into Marquette’s freshman year free throws made top 10 list, and where Joey Hauser is going to end up on it.
It’s probably an underrated aspect of Steve Wojciechowski’s tenure as Marquette head coach that the freshman year free throws made record has been broken three times since he signed his contract. More impressively, it happened three times in his first two seasons. With no postseason to help him, Duane Wilson squeaked past Dominic James to set a new record, and then the very next year, Henry Ellenson and Haanif Cheatham went soaring past Wilson to become the first MU freshmen to ever make at least 100 free throws in a season. Perhaps more impressively, Ellenson and Cheatham did that without a postseason bump, too.
After two years of not having freshmen excel at getting to the free throw line, Wojo has one this year in Joey Hauser. He’s already within 21 freebies of 10th place all time with 13 regular season games to go, and that has Hauser on pace to pull even with Doc Rivers for 7th place on the list by the time the airplane goes wheels up for the trip to the Big East tournament. Hauser is shooting 82% from the line, so if he can start boosting his per game attempt average up past 2.8 per contest, he could take a solid run at the top five. A long postseason run would be a big help there, too.
Here’s what the chart looks like at the end of the 2020-21 season.
