Marquette Men’s Basketball Rises To #12 In Associated Press Poll

That’s a new high for Steve Wojciechowski.

Marquette men’s basketball is currently riding a five game winning streak in Big East play. That’s the longest conference game winning streak under head coach Steve Wojciechowski and the best for the program since 2011-12.

As you might expect, the Associated Press voters have taken notice. With Marquette winning on the road without Markus Howard and rallying to beat Providence at home over the past week, the collective viewpoint of the voters is that the Golden Eagles are the #12 team in the country this week, rising up from #15 last week. MU earned 861 points in the balloting, dropping them in between #11 North Carolina with 895 points and #13 Maryland at 751 points. That’s some pretty solid separation in terms of points between MU and the Terps.

Kansas continues to be the top team in the poll in terms of who’s on Marquette’s schedule, but their grip is slipping. The Jayhawks are down to #9 in this week’s poll after being ranked #7 last week. Buffalo is up two spots to #14 this week as they continue to make Marquette’s non-conference schedule look even more impressive. Villanova has jumped up from #22 to #18 this week, while Louisville pokes their head into the top 25 for the first time this season at #23.

Down in the Receiving Votes department, there’s a few couple of names from the MU schedule. Kansas State are up to 91 points in the polling after winning four straight Big 12 games, and Wisconsin rode their home win over Michigan to 64 points, more than twice as many as they had a week ago.

Marquette returns to action on Wednesday night when they host DePaul at Fiserv Forum. Tipoff on FS1 is scheduled for 7:30pm Central, and I’m going to spend the next few days panicking about the Fiserv Forum Curse Of 12.
