The new AVCA top 25 poll came out on Monday, but when it comes to the top 11 teams in the country, there weren’t any changes in the names. In fact, nine of the top 11 stayed in the exact same spot as the week before. That includes YOUR Marquette, who are ranked #10 in the country, just like they were last week.
Marquette earned 987 points in the balloting this week. Creighton are at #9 this week, with 1,060 points, while BYU are sitting behind Marquette at #11 with 970 points. That’s a very small margin between MU and BYU, so you’d have to figure that the Golden Eagles earning a win over the Cougars in Provo ended up making a difference there.
When it comes to the list of Marquette opponents this week, Baylor and Wisconsin stayed in the same spots as last week, #3 and #4 respectively, and both squads each earned one first place vote in the polling. Creighton and BYU are in the same spots as well, just like Marquette. Illinois is the only Marquette related team this week to make some movement in the rankings, as they fell down two spots to #1 in the country in the new poll.
Marquette returns to action when they host DePaul on Friday night, just 23 hours before they make the trip down to Chicago for a quick return bout against the Blue Demons on Saturday. A pair of wins this weekend would guarantee that Marquette can’t finish lower than fifth place in the Big East standings, and if they catch a break with some other results, then they might even clinch a Big East tournament berth, too.
