It’s Monday, so as expected, there’s a brand new Associated Press top 25 poll for men’s basketball. We have good news and bad news on the Marquette front. The good news is that Marquette earned 23 points in this week’s poll, up from 11 last week. The bad news is that even after doubling their point total, the Golden Eagles fell from being the unofficial #30 team in the country to the unofficial #32 team in the country.
Three voters have Marquette at #21 in the country this week, which is their highest ranking this week. They have one supporter each at #22 and #24, while two more pollsters locked the Golden Eagles in at #25. That’s it for this week, but when you consider the fact that MU gained 12 points in the polling without even playing a single game, that’s just fine.
There are three teams on Marquette’s schedule in the top 25 this week. Maryland are down three spots to #7 this week, but they’re the only one of the three to fall this time around. Butler shifted up one spot to #17, while Villanova earned a two spot bump to #18.
Five teams on MU’s slate this season earned votes like the Golden Eagles without getting into the top 25. Xavier fell out of the top 25 after losing to Wake Forest over the weekend, but still earned 40 points. Purdue earned 30 points even after their road loss to Nebraska, while DePaul gained some ground to earn six points after their one 25th place vote last week. Georgetown rounded up three points in this poll, while Seton Hall dropped all the way from #22 in the country to just a mere three points this time around.
Marquette returns to action on Tuesday night when they host Grambling State. Tip-off is set for 7pm, with the broadcast coming on Fox Sports Wisconsin or your local Fox Sports Regional affiliate. After that, they’ll wrap up before Christmas by hosting North Dakota State on Friday. That one is an 8pm tip on FS1.
