Well, we’ve gotten enough of the 2019 college men’s lacrosse season underway, so it’s time for the first in-season edition of the Inside Lacrosse media poll. After Marquette’s 15-9 season opening win over Bellarmine, the voters saw fit to continue to give the Golden Eagles some votes.... but it’s not clear how many votes.
They’re unofficially the #25 team in the country, trailing behind Princeton, Army, Navy, and Hofstra in the receiving votes department. That might be more votes than they earned in the preseason poll when they were the unofficial #22 team in the country, it might be fewer than that. They don’t release the point totals for the teams outside the top 20, so we may never know.
To the surprise of no one, Marquette’s future opponents are heavily dotting the top 20. Big East preseason favorite Denver leads the way at #6, up two spots from last week. Notre Dame is also up two spots this week to #9, while Duke is down eight spots to #10 after losing to High Point this week. Ohio State moves from #16 to #12 in this poll, Georgetown rises three spots to #16, and finally, Michigan improves their positioning by one place since the preseason poll to now sit at #19.
My goodness that’s a lot of ranked teams ahead of the Golden Eagles, and that’s without even mentioning the fact that Villanova is the unofficial #28 team in the country down in the receiving votes area with Marquette.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday evening when they visit Jacksonville for a return bout from last year’s game at Valley Fields. First draw is scheduled for 6pm Central, and it appears that we may be forced to go without any kind of video for that one.
