Before we begin, your Big East men’s basketball standings, screencapped as they appear on BigEast.com:
This is all very important, because there’s really just one important game on the schedule this week.
Wednesday, February 27: #10 Marquette Golden Eagles at Villanova Wildcats (8pm Central, FS1) - After Marquette’s win over Providence on Saturday and Villanova’s loss to Xavier on Sunday, the Golden Eagles find themselves with a two game advantage in the loss column over the Wildcats. As luck would have it, the two teams collide on Wednesday night at Finneran Pavilion on Nova’s campus. If Marquette were to win, they would give Villanova their fifth loss of the season, and would leave the Golden Eagles with three games left to play. That means Marquette can’t do any worse than tying the Wildcats for the top spot in the league, thus making the Golden Eagles the regular season champions. By way of the sweep of the Wildcats, it would also clinch the #1 seed in the Big East tournament for Marquette. That’s all kind of a very big deal, and we didn’t even get into the fact that Villanova is going to be wildly desperate for a win of any kind after losing four of their last five and each of their last three games. Villanova hasn’t lost three straight league games since the 2012-13 season and haven’t lost four straight in conference play since 2011-12. So yeah, there’s a lot on the line here.
SECONDARY IMPORTANCE GAME!
Sunday, March 3: Creighton Bluejays at #10 Marquette Golden Eagles (2pm Central, FS1) - Okay, look. Let’s be honest. KenPom.com currently says that Marquette only has a 41% chance of winning at The Finn on Wednesday. The Golden Eagles still control their own destiny even if they would lose a perfectly reasonable game to lose like that. Thus, Sunday’s game against the Bluejays would take up a bit of importance. Either Marquette will be looking to seize sole control of the regular season championship after beating Nova on Wednesday or Marquette will be looking to bounce back from that loss and trim their magic number to at least a share of the title down to just 1 with a win over Creighton. It’s going to be one of them, and both are of equal importance here.
BONUS SUPER HAPPY ACTION FUN TIME GAME TO WATCH!
Friday, March 1: #13 Marquette Golden Eagles at Creighton Bluejays (7pm Central, Big East Digital Network) - Carolyn Kieger’s team has already done what Steve Wojciechowski’s team can do on Wednesday: Clinch the top seed and at least a share of the Big East regular season title. However, there’s still a little bit of drama for the final weekend of the women’s regular season, as one more MU win will allow them to claim sole possession of the regular season championship. That’s a pretty big deal, particularly since they had to share with DePaul last year. If they don’t win this one, they get one more swing at the piñata on Sunday afternoon in Rhode Island against Providence.
Here’s the full men’s basketball schedule for the week! Enjoy.
