Ilinois v Michigan

With Marquette already taking one loss this week while ranked #10, it’s ever so slightly more important to keep an eye on the rest of the top 10 when it comes to losses. MU is probably dropping out of the top 10 on Monday, regardless of whether or not they beat Villanova, but if they catch a few breaks here and there, maybe not.

Here’s who to cheer for against top 10 teams today:

Florida at #1 Tennessee
Saint Mary’s at #4 Gonzaga
Mississippi State vs #5 Kentucky
New Mexico at #6 Nevada
Miami at #8 North Carolina
Minnesota at #9 Michigan State

Oh, wait, I left one out. #2 Duke visits #3 Virginia today. We’re getting a top 10 team to lose no matter what there, so it doesn’t quite carry the importance of the other games. And that does it for all of the teams that you, a Marquette fan, should cheer for against top 10 teams today.

In terms of games with ranked teams overall today, 14 of the 33 games on national television involve at least one ranked team. In addition to the Duke-Virginia game, there are three other games that have two ranked foes squaring off, including the Marquette/Villanova game, which I believe is the first game amongst Big East teams this season that involves both sides being ranked. Seven ranked teams are on the road today, which means there are four ranked teams going up against unranked home teams. That should be enough of a recipe for upsets somewhere along the way today.

Good news: It’s Saint Mary’s/Gonzaga Day! Bad news: Gonzaga is favored by 15 points according to The Bulldogs don’t have a chance of winning lower than 90% according to KenPom until they wrap up the regular season in Moraga against the Gaels on March 2nd. Breaking news: Gonzaga is very good.

I’m kind of fascinated by the New Mexico/Nevada game. The Lobos beat the Wolf Pack by 27 in The Pit earlier this season, and this is the return bout back in Reno. KenPom says Nevada by 20 and a 96% chance to win..... but that’s also about what the algorithm said about their first meeting this season. We’ll see what happens.

Here’s your full national TV rundown for the day. Enjoy!
