Tied for sixth, actually, and that’s better than their #8 seed.

Led by a one-over-par 72s from Oliver Farrell and Austin Kendziorski, Marquette men’s golf is tied for sixth place after Day 1 of the NCAA regionals at UT Golf Club in Austin, Texas. The team is +6 together at the moment, and tied with USC in sixth place. The daily combined score of 290 is the best NCAA regional round recorded by Marquette in program history.

Farrell had the most consistent day of the five Golden Eagles in competition in Austin, pairing three bogeys with two birdies for his 72 on the day. He started and ended his day with six straight pars. Kendziorski was a bit all over the place, putting color notation all over his scorecard. He had six birdies on the day, three on each half of the course, but seven bogeys gave him a score to match Farrell for the best on the team. Both men are currently tied for 22nd place on the individual leaderboard, six strokes back from Texas’ Pierceson Coody at -5 after 18 holes.

Sitting tied for sixth after the first of three days is a good performance for Marquette. They came in seeded eighth in the 14 team region, and any time you’re playing above your seed, you’re doing well. Only the top five teams in Austin will advance to the NCAA national championship meet, so MU is in a position to be competitive for one of those spots. They are currently six strokes behind fifth place Clemson, who finished at even par on the day. However, this is team play, and six strokes is a relatively small amount in that regard, especially with 36 holes left to play.

Pepperdine and Texas are currently tied for the team lead. Both teams shot six-under-par for the first day of the event, and Pepperdine’s Joshua McCarthy is two strokes behind Coody for the individual lead.

Here’s your tee times for today, marked in Central time because Texas.
