Marquette women’s volleyball has picked up in 2019 right where they left off in 2018.

Last year was a series of new updates to Marquette’s new best ever ranking in the AVCA top 25 poll. The Golden Eagles capped off the year at #15 in the final poll of the year before starting 2019 at #16.

Now, in the first in-season poll of 2019? #11 in the country, and yes, that is a brand new all-time best ranking for Marquette. The Golden Eagles picked up 916 points in the poll this week. #10 Pittsburgh earned 955 points, while #12 Kentucky snagged 860 points.

Marquette gets a prime opportunity to boost their ranking over the next five matches, as they’ll see two top five opponents, another in the top 20, and yet another earning votes this week. Thursday night gives MU a trip to Madison to face #4 Wisconsin. After that, they’ll be back in Milwaukee for a pair of matches, which includes a visit from #17 Baylor. The following weekend, Illinois State will play host to Marquette along with #5 Illinois and UCF, who earned six points in the new poll.

Those aren’t the only Marquette opponents in the top 25 poll, of course. BYU, Marquette’s most recent victim, dropped from #9 to #13 after their home loss to the Golden Eagles. Creighton, thanks to an 0-2 opening weekend, dropped from #18 to #23 in the poll. Northern Iowa, who will be in the McGuire Center in late September, are the unofficial #35 team in the country this week thanks to 16 points in the balloting.

First serve for Marquette and Wisconsin on Thursday night is set for 7pm Central time, and the match will be televised on FS1. You know the Fox Sports folks were quite excited to see Marquette pull the upset of BYU on Saturday night.
