Two weeks, two new AVCA volleyball coaches top 25 polls, two new program best rankings for Marquette.

This one is a big one, though.

After beating #4 Wisconsin back on Thursday, the AVCA top 25 voters saw fit to elevate the Golden Eagles to #7 in the country in this week’s brand new poll. Not only is that the best ranking in program history for Marquette, it’s also the first time that MU has ever been ranked in the top 10. Last week’s program best ranking was at #11 in the country.

Marquette picked up 1,131 points in the polling this week. Pittsburgh earned 1,163 to barely edge MU out as the #6 team in the country, while Minnesota got 1,095 points to land in the #8 hole behind Marquette.

Baylor takes over as the best Marquette opponent on the board this week after an outstanding week for the Bears. They beat #4 Wisconsin on Friday and followed that up with a win over #11 Marquette on Sunday. That made Baylor the #5 team in the country this week, which is also a program best ranking for the Bears. As theorized in the recap of Sunday’s match, perhaps Baylor was wildly underrated to start the season.

Wisconsin stays in the top 10 after their pair of losses, coming in at #9 this week. BYU stayed steady at #13, while Illinois, MU’s opponent for this coming Saturday, dropped from #5 to #14. Creighton is the only other MU opponent ranked this week, as the Jays parlayed a win over then-#15 USC into a move from #23 to #17.

UCF are the only Marquette opponent in the Receiving Votes area this week. The team that will be waiting in Normal, Illinois, on Friday for the Golden Eagles picked up six points to be the unofficial #34 team in the country.

That match is set for a 4:30pm Central time start in the Redbird Classic, an event hosted by Illinois State. Saturday’s match against Illinois is scheduled to start at 7:30pm, while Sunday’s tournament wrapup against the hosting Redbirds should begin at 3pm.
