On Friday night, YOUR Marquette Golden Eagles knocked off the then-#4 ranked Wisconsin Badgers in very thrilling fashion.
On Monday afternoon, the Associated Press announced their newest top 25 rankings after the past week’s action. As befitting a team with a top five victory, Marquette is earning votes in the poll.
But that’s all they’re doing.
Marquette is not ranked after beating the #4 team in the country, and considering that they weren’t earning votes at all last week, that’s fine. Baby steps. After all, the Golden Eagles did go 1-1 last week with a home loss to Oklahoma State before Friday night’s victory. All told, Marquette earned 22 points in this week’s poll, which makes them the unofficial #32 team in the country. That has them tucked right behind a falling Oregon and — check this out — Oklahoma State at 26 points, and three points in front of Missouri.
10 voters put the Golden Eagles into the top 25, led by Clayton Collier and John Werner installing MU as the #22 team in the country. Two voters each had Marquette at #23 and #24, while four voters put them at #25 in the country. 51 voters declined to include the Golden Eagles in their weekly ranking.
Creighton gets the nod as the top ranked team on Marquette’s schedule this week, as the undefeated Bluejays are #8 in the country with 1,068 points. Villanova is one spot behind them at 1,033 points, up three notches from a week ago. The loss to Marquette has knocked Wisconsin down either nine or ten spots in the poll, depending on your thinking. They’re now tied with Texas for #13 with 750 points, but you could just as easily say they are #14.
That’s it for ranked teams, but the polling still has a lot to be settled out as could be expected this early in the season. In addition to Marquette and Oklahoma State in the receiving votes department, you can also find future MU opponents Connecticut (#34, 12 points), Xavier (#35, 9 points), and UCLA (T-40th, 1 point) jockeying for position in the poll for next week.
Marquette returns to action on Tuesday night when they play host to Green Bay. Tipoff on that game is set for 8pm Central time and it will be broadcast on FS1. After that, the Golden Eagles will travel to Los Angeles to face UCLA and their one 25th place AP top 25 vote on Friday night.
