Marquette Lands At #19 In New AP Poll

Totally fine, given a road loss to a top 15 team as the only game in the last week.

Let’s focus on the good news: Marquette men’s basketball is ranked for the second consecutive week for the first time this season.

The bad news: The Golden Eagles dipped one spot from last week, falling from #18 to #19. The medium news: Marquette played one game over the last week, a road loss to then-#15 Villanova, and they rallied from down 18 early in the second half to make it interesting at the end, so really, dropping one spot is fine.

Marquette snagged 404 points this week. That puts them between #18 Colorado with 501 points, and well away from #20 Iowa with 254 points. Our friends over at Poll Tracker don’t have/haven’t published the individual ballots, so we can’t point and laugh at the jerkwads who left MU off their individual top 25 this week.

Maryland holds onto their spot as the highest ranked Marquette opponent this week, rising two spots to #7 in the new poll. Beating the Golden Eagles helped Villanova move up three spots to #12, making them the highest ranked Big East team in the top 25. Creighton jumped eight spots (!) to #15, while Seton Hall fell six spots (!) to land at #16. Butler continues their decline, falling from #19 to #21 here.

There are 21 teams earning votes this week but not getting into the top 25, and amazingly, none of them are on Marquette’s schedule. That’s weirdly impressive for some reason.

Marquette returns to action when they host #15 Creighton on Tuesday night. The Bluejays have won three straight games right now and seven of their last eight as well.
