The Big East announced the finalized 2020 women’s basketball conference tournament bracket on Monday morning. The league had to wait for the NCAA to update the RPI following the conclusion of Sunday’s games due to a tie for ninth place between Georgetown and Xavier that could not be broken in any other fashion.

Here’s the official field!

The important part for us here on this notably Marquette-centric website is that the Marquette are the #2 seed in the tournament. That advances them directly past the Friday doubleheader and into Saturday’s quarterfinals. They’ll play in the 6pm Central quarterfinal game at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, which is the first of the two games in the night session. That game, as will all the quarterfinal encounters, will be broadcast on FS2.

Marquette’s opponent in that game will be the winner of Friday’s #7/#10 game between Villanova and Xavier. Villanova finished in a five-way tie for third place in the Big East at 11-7, but by way of the tiebreakers to settle all of that out, the Wildcats ended up as the fifth and final team in the group. Xavier lost out on the RPI tiebreaker to Georgetown, with the Hoyas coming in at #247 against #264 for the Musketeers. Marquette split the season series with Villanova, with each side winning at home, while the Golden Eagles beat Xavier easily in both meetings.

If MU were to advance to Sunday’s semifinals, they would play at 7:30pm Central. The opponent would be either #3 St. John’s or #6 Creighton. MU swept the season series with the Red Storm, but split with the Jays with each side winning their home game.
