It’s been a minute since we’ve gotten to talk about recruiting for Marquette women’s basketball, but we get to change that up right now. As of July 30th, head coach Megan Duffy and her staff have extended a scholarship offer to Class of 2022 guard Lexus Bargesser.
I’m not entirely sure where to go for Bargesser’s height. This is her club team, Michigan Premier, saying that she’s 5’8”, but I have no idea when they last updated the page other than noting her 2020 hoops accolades. Back in May 2019, Prep Girls Hoops said that she was 5’8”. Lady Ballers Insider, however, says that she’s 5’10”. I’m inclined to take this one seriously, as LBI also has a scouting report for Bargesser from Windy In The Indy during July 2020. That seems like the most recent thing, so that’s probably the best bet.
Anyway, Marquette is just one of a bunch of high major programs to come knocking for the Jackson, Michigan, native. In mid-July, she had just picked up offers from Big East foes Xavier, Providence, and Butler along with Illinois. As you’ll recall, two of MU’s assistants from last season are now employed by the Illini, so you can see some recruiting continuity there. Over the last week or so, Bargesser has added offers from West Virginia and Virginia Tech in addition to the Golden Eagles. No disrespect to anyone involved, but I feel like Marquette is now Bargesser’s top offer on the table.
As a Class of 2022 prospect, Bargesser was a sophomore last season. She averaged 19.1 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 3.1 steals per game as her Grass Lake High School squad ended up as conference co-champs. Seems pretty good. Also pretty good: Being named All-Division 3 First Team by Michigan’s state coaches’ association.
Let’s spin back around to that Lady Ballers Insider scouting report:
Lexus Bargesser has made a splash in the recruiting the past month, and she is showing why she is becoming a household name coming up big for premier on the defensive end shot-blocking shots, playing the passing lanes and applying pressure on defense. Bargesser has also improved her jump shot as she looks very comfortable shooting the deep ball.
In terms of video highlights, can I interest you in TWELVE MINUTES WORTH OF FOOTAGE that appears to have been published on YouTube by Bargesser herself?
And now on to the scholarship chart.
Bargesser is a 2022 prospect, and Marquette projects to only have one scholarship opening up between spring and fall of 2022. With that said, Duffy has one commit on board for 2021 and three scholarship spots still available. One or more of those spots could remain open for 2022. 2022-23 will be the senior year for the freshmen on Duffy’s first roster at Marquette, so the Golden Eagles won’t need immediate impact players in that recruiting class. However, anybody that signs up from the Class of 2022 is going to be asked to pull their own weight when their sophomore season comes around and that senior class is gone.
