Marquette Volleyball Hangs On To Some AVCA Votes

Kinda figured losing to #24 would be the end of it for the Golden Eagles, and yet here we are.

Over the weekend, Marquette volleyball suffered their fourth loss of the season and their second loss in Big East play. They fell 3-1 to #24 Creighton on Friday night in a match where the Golden Eagles were not particularly competitive in the final two sets of action. With Marquette spending most of the season hovering just outside the AVCA top 25, I figured a second loss to the Jays, especially with Creighton just barely inside the top 25 themselves, would be enough to end MU’s run as a team earning votes this season.

And I was wrong.

There are enough voters to give Marquette 15 points in the latest poll. That makes MU the unofficial #29 team in the country, tucked in between Arizona State with 30 points and Florida State with 12 points. That’s down from last week to be sure, but it’s not completely out of the polling either.

We have just one tiny shift in the rankings of the three teams on MU’s schedule that are in the top 25. Thanks to a loss to a top 15 Purdue team over the weekend, Wisconsin dropped from #3 in the country to #4 in the country. That’s it for changes, as Kentucky is still #5 this week and Creighton is still #24.

Marquette will continue their pursuit of at least a share of the Big East regular season title when they head out to the New York City area for a pair of matches this weekend. First serve against Seton Hall in South Orange is at 5pm Central on Friday evening, while things will get started in Queens against St. John’s at 3pm Central on Saturday. Both matches will be streamed by FloSports.
