Marquette Volleyball Stays In The AVCA Top 25

There was a bit of doubt after going 1-1 on the road against a ranked team over the past week.

Over the weekend, Marquette volleyball took their #25 ranking in the AVCA poll to Omaha for two matches against #19 Creighton. The Golden Eagles went 1-1 in their matches, losing in five sets in the first one before winning the second one in a sweep. Since that was Marquette’s second loss of the season and they were already in the very last spot in the top 25, there was a pretty good reason to believe that the voters might send MU out of the poll this week.

They did not.

Just like last week, Marquette is the #25 team in the country in the new AVCA poll. The Golden Eagles snagged 137 points in the voting this week, which has them behind #24 Michigan with 176 points and ahead of Oregon in the top receiving votes spot at 115 points.

Interestingly, the Bluejays suffered as a result of going 1-1 at home against Marquette. Creighton was #19 in the country last week, but now they’re #21. There’s a pretty decent gap between #20 San Diego (304 points) and #22 Washington State (256 points) where Creighton landed with 274 points,

The Jays are the only team on Marquette’s schedule in the top 25, and that will probably stay that way all season. They’re also the only team on the schedule receiving votes, as Illinois State has dropped out of the RV department after dropping to 4-3 on the season before the new poll came out on Monday afternoon.

Marquette returns to action on Friday night when they host DePaul in the first of two weekend matches against the Blue Demons to open up Big East play. First serve is set for 7pm Central time.
