So the new United Soccer Coaches poll came out on Tuesday afternoon, the day after Marquette lost to Tulsa down in Oklahoma. The Golden Eagles were ranked #13 in last week’s poll, but USC closes up shop on counting matches on Sunday night. Thus, the Golden Eagles were officially 3-0-0 for this edition of the poll.
And they dropped from #13 to #18.
That stinks.
Marquette picked up 186 points in the poll this week. Kentucky comes in at #17 with 197 points, while Duke are at #19 with 173 points. Things are pretty close in this part of the rankings, to say the least.
When we talk about teams on Marquette’s schedule in the poll, we have to go to the very top of the chart. Georgetown ascended from #2 to #1 this week as they moved their record to 3-0-0 on the year and Indiana, last week’s #1, suffered a loss to Creighton. Seton Hall slipped two spots this week, going from #20 to #22 as their record goes to 2-0-2 on the year. Tulsa, as expected, moves into the top 25 this week after beating #8 Missouri State back on Friday, landing at #24. I’d imagine they’ll be even higher next week after technically beating #18 Marquette.
Wanna hear something totally bonkers? Creighton got absolutely zero votes after beating the #1 team in the country.
The Golden Eagles return to action this Friday night when they visit Northern Illinois. First kick on NIU’s internal pay service is set for 7pm Central time. After that, MU will bounce back to Milwaukee to host Wisconsin on Monday night in their final tune-up match before the start of Big East play.
