Big East Basketball What To Watch: Week 10

Hey, there’s a whole lot of fun basketball in this league this week. I know, it’s the standard, but that’s good.

Tuesday, January 9: Georgetown Hoyas at St. John’s Red Storm (5:30pm Central, FS1) - It’s officially red flag time for the Red Storm. St. John’s has opened up league play 0-4, but in their defense, they haven’t had Marcus LoVett in the lineup since the start of December, and Shamorie Ponds missed the second league game with an injury. Ponds is almost assuredly not 100%, so while he’s playing a ton of minutes, he’s probably not playing as best as he could be. The point of all of this is that they’re struggling, and it’s probably not going to be a fun season for the Johnnies. Getting Georgetown at home is a prime chance for their first conference win of the season, and with Villanova and Xavier coming up behind the Hoyas, St. John’s desperately needs to take advantage.

Tuesday, January 9: #13 Seton Hall Pirates at Marquette Golden Eagles (8pm Central, CBS Sports Network) - In four games this season, Marquette has taken care of business twice and submitted very quality efforts in losses against teams with deep tournament run futures ahead of them. The Golden Eagles are going to need a win (or two or three) against the top four in the Big East if they want to even qualify for the NCAA tourney, and this will be their second crack at one of those top four at home. They need the win. On the other end of the court, Seton Hall is currently in first place in the Big East, and at 3-0, they’re the only team without a loss already. This is a prime opportunity for the Pirates to press their advantage in the table and extend their lead, as well as prove once again that they can beat quality foes on the road. They didn’t go back to New Jersey after Saturday’s game at Butler, so we’ll see if the extended road trip affects them.

Wednesday, January 10: #10 Xavier Musketeers at #1 Villanova Wildcats (7pm Central, FS1) - GAME OF THE WEEK, AND IT’S NOT CLOSE. This needs no further explanation.

Friday, January 12: Butler Bulldogs at Marquette Golden Eagles (7pm Central, Big East Digital Network) - This is not the men’s game between the two schools that also takes place on Friday. That one is in Indianapolis. This is the women’s game between the two, and it continues the gauntlet run for the Golden Eagles to start the league season. MU is 4-0 and alone atop the standings. Presuming they get past Providence in Rhode Island safely (they didn’t last year, so fingers crossed), the Golden Eagles will still be on top here. Butler is currently one of two teams tied for second place (the other is DePaul), thus making this a huge opportunity for both squads. Marquette could expand their lead with a win, and Butler could lay claim to being a title contender if they snag the victory.

Saturday, January 13: #25 Creighton Bluejays at #10 Xavier Musketeers (1pm Central, Fox) - This game would be Game Of The Week in the league in a lot of other weeks, but unfortunately for Creighton, Xavier’s other contest takes the cake. That could end up being an advantage for the Bluejays, depending on how Wednesday’s game goes. If it’s a highly physical up-and-down contest, maybe Creighton can go into Cintas Center on an extra day of rest and swipe a win. However, they may end up catching Xavier at a desperation point. The Musketeers got caught on the road against Providence on Saturday, and the fact of the matter is that Villanova’s favored on Wednesday. If XU is coming into this one with two straight losses..... hoo boy, it could be a bad time in the Queen City for the visitors.

Sunday, January 14: Butler Bulldogs at DePaul Blue Demons (3:30pm Central, CBS Sports Network) - Thanks to the travel partner system on the women’s basketball side, teams are going to end up with brutal stretches every time they have to go to Marquette and DePaul in the span of three days. That’s the task set in front of Butler here, as they have to rebound from whatever happens on Friday in Milwaukee to give a stern test to the Blue Demons down in Chicago. As mentioned earlier, these two teams are currently tied for second place in the league, so this game could end up being a watershed moment in terms of where the standings go for the rest of the season.
