Let’s see what the highlights on the schedule are, shall we?
Tuesday, February 12: #10 Marquette Golden Eagles at DePaul Blue Demons (7pm Central, Fox Sports Wisconsin/other FS regional affiliates) - Yep, DePaul makes the What To Watch this week. First, it’s Marquette/DePaul, so there’s the “Don’t Lose To DePaul” aspect of the entire thing. Second, Marquette did lose at Wintrust last year, so nothing is ever a given. Third, DePaul is currently part of the five-way tie for third place at 5-6. I don’t know if the official standings on BigEast.com are displaying things with tiebreakers officially squared away, but if they are, DePaul would get the bye into the conference tournament quarterfinals right now. What a time to be alive. Anyway, the point is that MU only won by 10 at Fiserv earlier this year, and DePaul will be hunting for a win to try to pull their way out of this mishmash in the middle of the league table.
Tuesday, February 12: Butler Bulldogs at St. John’s Red Storm (7:30pm Central, CBS Sports Network) - Let’s keep it simple: both teams are part of that five-way tie for third. The winner gets to be 6-6, the loser is 5-7 and starting to look a little screwed when it comes to the NCAA tournament. That would be especially bad for St. John’s, considering that they blew all of their goodwill from beating Marquette in Milwaukee by losing to Providence by 14 at Madison Square Garden.
Wednesday, February 13: Georgetown Hoyas at Seton Hall Pirates (7:30pm Central, FS1) - Again, simplicity: It’s two of the teams in the five-way tie for third place. Someone has to come out of this game at 6-6. If it’s Georgetown, I think we have to start taking the Hoyas somewhat seriously as an NCAA tournament team, as slightly bonkers as that sounds.
Friday, February 15 & Sunday, February 17: #8 Marquette Golden Eagles at St. John’s Red Storm/at Seton Hall Pirates (6pm Central/11am Central; Big East Digital Network/CBS Sports Network) - Yes, I’m not drawing a difference between these two women’s basketball games, because they’re both of equal importance for Carolyn Kieger’s team. If the Golden Eagles go out to the New York City area and claim two victories this coming weekend, they will clinch at least a share of a Big East regular season title. It’s not a gimme after MU only beat the Red Storm by 10 in Milwaukee a few weeks ago. If the Golden Eagles get a little help from either of these opponents in their travel partner games against DePaul as well as from Creighton and/or Providence in their games against Butler, then Marquette can actually clinch the #1 seed in the Big East tournament, too. So, yeah, kind of a big deal.
Here’s the full rundown for the week! Enjoy!
