Marquette sits at 6-4 on the season heading into tonight's contest, which will be their last non-conference match before the start of the Big East schedule this weekend. While the record isn't anything to write home about on the surface, all four losses have come against teams ranked in the top 13 of the AVCA poll at the time of the match, including three against teams in the top 4. Outside hitter Autumn Bailey picked up her third Freshman Of The Week honors from the Big East through just four weeks of the season as she continues to run roughshod over MU's opponents. Bailey's 4.03 kills/set rank second in the Big East, while senior setter Elizabeth Koberstein leads the league in assists (11.28/set) and junior outside hitter Lindsey Gosh has refined her powerful lefty serve to be tops in the Big East in aces/set.
Illinois State is riding a three match winning streak, including their first two matches in Missouri Valley Conference play. They haven't dropped a set in any of the three contests. No single player is particularly dominant on offense, with four players averaging more than 2.1 kills per set. Junior setter Kaitlyn Early is adept at finding the hot hand, averaging 10.10 assists/set. Early gets it done on the back line, too, averaging 2.48 digs, but fellow junior Emily Orrick anchors things with just under four digs in every set.
