Congrats, Vander!

Los Angeles Lakers 110, Portland Trail Blazers 98 - Kyle Kuzma scored a game high 30 points on a night where it almost seemed like he couldn’t miss from the field and the Lakers defeated the Trail Blazers with relative ease in the 2017 Las Vegas Summer League championship game. Kuzma’s shooting was ridiculous as the Utah product hit 69% of his overall shots which included a 6-of-10 performance from long range. He ended up with a double-double by wrapping up 10 defensive rebounds as well. Fittingly, Kuzma was named MVP of the championship game.

I have to say “relative ease” because it was a close game in the first half with Portland clinging to a one point lead at halftime. Things got much slower in the scoring department after intermission as the two teams slowed way down from their nearly 120 point pace. The two teams volleyed the lead back and forth for most of the third period, including several ties along the way before a Matt Thomas triple with 3:46 remaining put Los Angeles up by four at 76-72 and a Kuzma three put the Lakers up by five heading to the final frame.

Things got comfortable for LA early in the fourth when another Thomas three-pointer extended the lead to 11 points. Portland only managed to get the margin as close as seven the rest of the way as the Lakers kept answering all of their big shots.

Former Marquette guard Vander Blue had a good night for the Lakers as they played without rookie sensation and shoe model Lonzo Ball, as he sat with a calf injury sustained in the previous night’s game. Blue went for 20 points on a very solid 7-for-12 shooting night, and he also chipped in five rebounds and six assists. He averaged 15.0 points in the eight games that the Lakers played in Summer League while shooting an even 50% from the floor. Vander also added 3.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game, which is pretty solid work for a shade over 27 minutes on average.

Portland had all five starters in double-digits for scoring, including a double-double performance from former Purdue big man Caleb Swanigan. Biggie had 25 points and 12 rebounds, and that’s without even mentioning his seven assists. Show of hands: Who’s excited that he’s not playing for Purdue when they come to the Bradley Center in November? Let’s see... yep, that’s everyone with their hand raised.

Here’s a highlight package of the Lakers in Summer League play, and it’s worth it to watch just for the pass that Blue throws at about the 35 second mark.

CHAMPIONSHIP DAY!

Los Angeles Lakers 108, Dallas Mavericks 98 - Thanks to a game high 24 points from Kyle Kuzma, the LA Lakers are on to the Las Vegas Summer League Championship game after defeating the Mavs on Sunday night.

It almost didn’t work out for them. Los Angeles had a 22 point lead at halftime, but rookie Lonzo Ball sat out the second half with what appeared to be a calf injury. Without the dynamic stat stuffer at point guard, the Lakers started letting Dallas back into the game. It didn’t seem like much to start, with the Mavs only trimming the lead to 13 late in the third quarter before trailing by 14 to start the final period.

Things officially got dicey when Yogi Ferrell drained a triple with five minutes left and cut the margin to 10 points. Even after that, Dallas still scored the next nine points of the game and left Los Angeles with a 96-95 lead with 2:17 to go.

I doubt it was Dallas’ intention with that much time left, but they started sending the Lakers to the line after that. Alex Caruso stemmed the Dallas tide with a pair of freebies, and LA would make nine of their 10 free throw attempts down the stretch while the Mavericks were only able to manage three free throws of their own in their attempt to complete the comeback.

Vander Blue finished with 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting on the night. The former Marquette Golden Eagles guard also added five rebounds and six assists to the Los Angeles effort.

Los Angeles will face the Portland Trailblazers in the LVSL title game. Portland defeated Memphis, 87-82, in the other semifinal game behind a 22 point outing from Jarnell Stokes.

Only one Golden Eagle is left standing & he had a big night to propel his team to a win.

Los Angeles Lakers 115, Brooklyn Nets 106 - Vander Blue scored a game high 27 points to drive the Lakers to a quarterfinal victory in the Las Vegas Summer League tournament and put Los Angeles two wins away from the title.

It wasn’t all sunshine and lollipops for the former Marquette guard. Blue had just eight points at halftime as Brooklyn held a 63-55 lead after Spencer Dinwiddie hit a buzzer beater three-pointer for the Nets. Obviously, the reigning G-League MVP had a big second half, racking up 19 points and two each in rebounds, steals and assists after the break to help rally the troops for the win.

Blue wasn’t alone out there, as Kyle Kuzma nearly matched him with 26 points and noted shoe sensation Lonzo Ball chipped in a 14/9/7 line to keep things humming along all over the court. Brooklyn got double digit scoring efforts from four different guys in the loss, led by 23 points from Caris LeVert.

Los Angeles is in Sunday night’s semifinals of the LVSL tournament, where they’ll take on the Dallas Mavericks. Dallas arrived in the semis after defeating Boston 91-74 in the quarterfinals.

Two former Golden Eagles have wrapped up their time in Vegas following the consolation round.

Atlanta Hawks 92, Houston Rockets 86 - SHOUT OUT TO TRENT LOCKETT! In the final Summer League game for the Hawks, the former Golden Eagle led Atlanta to victory with a 17 point performance. He also snagged five rebounds, dished three assists, blocked two shots, and came up with a steal. All in all, a nice bit of business in 27 minutes of action.

As for the game itself, it was pretty tightly contested with neither team leading by more than 10 points at any juncture. Atlanta took the lead for good early in the fourth quarter when Alpha Kaba jammed it home to put the Hawks up 68-67. It was still close in the late goings when Troy Williams got an and-1 to pull Houston within one with 3:41 remaining. They wouldn’t score for another three minutes, though, and that was that.

Golden State Warriors 109, Los Angeles Clippers 100 - 13 ties and eight lead changes eventually turned into a nine point victory for the Dubs to wrap up Summer League play for both squads. Dylan Ennis came off the bench to score 35 points in just 28 minutes, largely powered by an 8-of-11 performance from three-point range. The rest of the Warriors? A very un-Warriors-esque 3-of-11 from distance.

Jamil Wilson played just five minutes in this game. He missed one three-pointer and committed one foul. He wraps up Summer League shooting an absurd 79% from the field, most of that coming on three-point attempts. It appears that he’s on the verge of signing a two-way contract with the Clippers, so presumably Doc Rivers knows that most basketball players can’t maintain the torrid pace that Wilson was on in Las Vegas.

One Summer League tournament run ends, another continues....

Miami Heat 91, Los Angeles Clippers 84 - Giving up two 20 point performances to players coming off the bench did not work out in Los Angeles’ favor on Thursday night as Miami got big games from Okaro White, Justin Robinson, and Gian Clavell in order to advance to Saturday’s Summer League quarterfinals.

The Heat fought their way back from a first quarter deficit to take a lead heading to the fourth quarter, but eight quick points from Jamil Wilson early in the quarter had the Clips out in front by three. Miami would retake the lead with 3:38 remaining on a Robinson step back, and they would never relinquish it again.

We can say this much for sure: LA didn’t lose because of Jamil Wilson. The former Marquette forward came off the bench and continued to endear himself to the Clippers faithful with 11 points in just 13 minutes. He went 4-of-5 from the field, including 3-of-4 from long range. Wilson also chipped in three rebounds along the way just to add to his overall efficiency.

The Clippers are out of the running for the Summer League title, but they still have one consolation round game left to play on Friday.

Los Angeles Lakers 94, Cleveland Cavaliers 83 - The Lakers never trailed on Thursday night as they beat the Cavs in a seed vs seed upset in the Las Vegas Summer League tournament. Officially it’s an upset when the #15 beats the #2, but it’s Summer League, so these teams aren’t that far apart and weird things can happen from game to game. The Lakers advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals, where they’ll play #7 seeded Brooklyn.

Anywho, Lonzo Ball racked up a triple-double for Los Angeles, collecting 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists. He wasn’t the high scorer, though, as that honor goes to Kyle Kuzma and his 20 point outing. Kay Felder had 25 points for the Cavaliers to record the game high scoring total, albeit in a losing effort.

Vander Blue got the start again for the Lakers and had a much better performance than the night before. Blue knocked down seven of his 11 field goal attempts on his way to 18 points in the game, and he also contributed four rebounds and four assists

Neither of the two former Golden Eagles in action had exciting days, and only one ended up as a winner.

New Orleans Pelicans 105, Atlanta Hawks 95 - Powered by a trio of 20 point scorers, New Orleans advanced in the Summer League tournament with a win over Atlanta on Wednesday. Jalen Jones (21), Cheick Diallo (21), and Quinn Cook (26) all had big days, and both Diallo and Cook shot over 65% from the floor to power the Pelicans.

It’s a surprising win for New Orleans, as they lost all three of their opening round games and were seeded dead last in the tournament. It turns out all things are possible when you shoot 45% on threes in a game.

John Collins led the way for Atlanta with 25 points and nine rebounds, but we’re here to talk about Trent Lockett. The former Marquette guard saw 14 minutes of action, scored six points, grabbed up three rebounds, and still found time to dish an assist and come up with a steal.

Los Angeles Lakers 103, Philadelphia 76ers 102 - Lonzo Ball, y’all. Lonzo Ball.

After a rough start to Summer League for the former UCLA Bruins point guard, he went crrrrrrazy on Wednesday night to help the Lakers advance to the second round of the tournament. Ball finished with 36 points, eight rebounds, 11 assists, five steals, and two blocks for one hell of a night with both Josh Hart and Brandon Ingram sitting this one out. Sure, he had six turnovers, too, but who’s counting??

The two teams headed to the fourth with Philly up 83-75, and for most of the quarter, it looked like the Sixers would hold Los Angeles off by the end. It didn’t turn into a two point game until just under three minutes to go when Ball sank a layup. Even then, Philly pushed the lead back to six on a Furkan Korkmaz three-pointer with less than 90 seconds left.

The Lakers went on a 9-2 run after that, though, but even with that, the Sixers still had a chance. James Blackmon made a layup with six seconds left that gave Philadelphia the lead, but Jonah Bolden fouled Ivica Zubac on LAL’s ensuing possession and the big man from Bosnia drained both of his freebies to provide the final margin.

Vander Blue got the starting nod in the backcourt next to Ball, and unsurprisingly, he had a quiet night. Blue scored just four points on 1-of-8 shooting, but he did add two rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

No MU-related games yesterday, but two of the teams with Golden Eagles will be in action today.

All three NBA Las Vegas Summer League teams with former Marquette Golden Eagles players - Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, and Los Angeles Lakers - wrapped up their opening round action before Tuesday night, so we have no games to recap from yesterday.

Wednesday marks the start of tournament play, and we do have two of the above teams listed in action. Trent Lockett’s Hawks squad earned the #9 seed in the tournament, the first spot to not earn a bye to the second round, and they’ll play the New Orleans Pelicans, the last place team today. Down on the other end of the bracket, the Lakers and Vander Blue were slotted into the field as the #15 seed, which means they’ll play the Philadelphia 76ers today. Jamil Wilson and the Clippers were awarded the #5 seed, and as a top 8 seed, they get a bye to the second round. They’ll play the winner of Washington and Miami tomorrow.

A big time game from Vander Blue was the highlight from Monday night.

Atlanta Hawks 75, Chicago Bulls 55 - Would you believe that Atlanta led 17-14 after one quarter here? Then they led 45-26 at the half. That’s not great for Chicago, guys.

DeAndre Bembry came away with the high score for the game with 17 points, which gives you a nice solid feel for how this went. It’s almost as if Chicago actually won a separate game to see who could ugly this thing up worse. The Hawks shot 35% in the game, while the Bulls only managed to shoot 22%.

To make matters worse, former Marquette guard Trent Lockett picked up a DNP - Coach’s Decision here, so there’s really not much to talk about.

Los Angeles Clippers 100, Milwaukee Bucks 93 - Well, now this is more like it.

Los Angeles flipped the script on Milwaukee in the fourth quarter, using a 29-18 margin in the final period to turn a four point deficit into the final margin of seven points. The Clips took the lead for good on a Sindarius Thornwell layup with 8:30 left to play, which was part of an 11-0 run to start the fourth quarter.

LA’s Montrezl Harrell and Milwaukee’s Rashad Vaughn tied for the game high in points with 21, and they matched each other with three rebounds and an assist as well. Former MU forward Jamil Wilson had another big game for the Clippers, scoring 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting in just 27 minutes of play, and he also had eight rebounds and eight assists for quite the full stat sheet.

Los Angeles Lakers 95, Sacramento Kings 92 - With Lonzo Ball sitting out for.... whatever reason, the Lakers needed someone to carry them to victory late against Sacramento, and they turned to none other than former Marquette guard Vander Blue.

Blue scored 21 points off the bench for Los Angeles, and added six rebounds and two assists, too. However, it was the 10 points in the final quarter that were the biggest for LA, including a jumper with 1:51 left to put his team up 88-83, and a triple off an assist from Alex Caruso to answer one of three straight three-pointers from Sacramento’s Buddy Hield.

Blue even got the assist on Thomas Bryant’s layup that turned into the final basket of the game and gave the Lakers enough breathing room to go to overtime in case of Hield draining one more three-pointer.... but his final attempt was hurried and he ended up missing everything.

Here’s what I think is every made basket in the final six minutes.

And full game highlights:

And, believe it or not, someone assembled a Vander Blue highlight package.

There are no Las Vegas Summer League games that involve former Marquette players tonight. All three of their teams have finished play in the opening round or pool play or whatever the NBA calls it. They’ll resume action on July 12th after the league seeds the 24 team tournament.
