I was pretty sure that I was going to miss the mark on most of the predictions.

And honestly, I was right.

DePaul has been installed as the preseason favorite to win the women's basketball league. The Blue Demons picked up eight of the available nine first place votes, as head coach Doug Bruno was unable to vote for his team. Bruno's vote and the other unaccounted for vote went to Creighton, the team that I had picked as my prediction for the preseason favorite. You're here for Marquette news, and the Golden Eagles finished fifth in the balloting, earning 55 points, finishing just one point behind Villanova. Here's the full list:

1. DePaul
2. Creighton
3. St. John's
4. Villanova
5. Marquette
6. Georgetown
7. Butler
8. Providence
9. Xavier
10. Seton Hall

The four squads coming off NCAA tournament appearances in 2013 are the top four teams, even though St. John's lost two oustanding seniors. Marquette is one of two 2013 WNIT teams in the league, so I suppose that makes sense for fifth place. I don't really know how Georgetown slots above Butler, the other WNIT team, but there you have it. There's a big drop off in the accumulated points between Marquette (55) and Georgetown (36), so it seems that third, fourth, and fifth place were jumbled a bit in the various ballots, but there's a clear dividing line between the top and bottom half of the league.

As I mentioned, I had DePaul and Creighton flipped in my predictions. I had Marquette and Butler pegged to improve on last year in the next two spots, followed by Villanova. The coaches have elected to disagree with me and I saw that one coming. It was hard to get a read on the teams that are carrying over from last year with Notre Dame not losing at all, Connecticut only losing to Notre Dame, and Syracuse only losing to Notre Dame and UConn. That's a lot of losses for the rest of the league, and most of them were bad losses. The one thing that I would predict for this year is that scoring averages will be way up by the end of the season.

The women's side of the Big East has done things a little different than the men's side.

While the men's basketball side of the Big East aimed at two five man all-conference teams, the women's basketball side changed things up. They've named a preseason player of the year and a rookie of the year, like the men did, but they had the coaches vote on a ten woman all-conference team. Senior forward Katherine Plouffe is Marquette's lone representative on the all-conference team, and it's a well deserved honor for the Canadian native.

UPDATE: Thanks to MUTV Sports, I've added the preseason Honorable Mentions to the list of awards, including Marquette's own Arlesia Morse! Belated congratulations, Arlesia!

Let's get to the full list of the awards!

Big East Preseason Player of the Year: Brittany Hrynko, G, DePaul

Big East Preseason Rookie of the Year: Shayla Cooper, F, Georgetown

For our predictions post from yesterday, I only named five players to the all-conference team. I didn't expect the 10 member team, but the good news is that all five players that I picked - McClung, Janning, Nelson, Plouffe, and Simmons - all showed up on the all conference team, and I made the easy pick on Hrynko as the preseason Player of the Year, as well. Due to the number of departed seniors, it was hard to come up with five players for my predictions, so we'll see how this list compares to the postseason all-conference honors in March.

Well, that's not terribly surprising, is it?

If you've been paying attention to the preseason predictions from various media outlets that have come out so far, it shouldn't be surprising to you to find out that the Big East's coaches have voted Marquette as the favorite to win the league this season.

Marquette picked up five of the nine available first place votes, as Buzz Williams wasn't able to vote for his own squad. That's also what you can call a majority decision. The Golden Eagles finished with 74 points in the voting, while Georgetown finished second in the balloting with 70 points and two first place votes. Creighton finished third with one first place vote, followed by Villanova, and then St. John's in fourth place, although the Johnnies did earn a first place vote from someone.

That's mostly how our predictions went. The only difference is I had Villanova outside the top five, with St. John's moving up to take their spot and Providence taking up the fifth place spot instead. The Friars finished in sixth place in the balloting, so I suppose I wasn't that far off.

Agree with the voting? Disagree? Your thoughts are always welcome in the comments section!

Congratulations gentlemen!

The first item of news coming out of Media Day in New York City is that senior foward Davante Gardner has been named one of five players on the All-Big East First Team; while senior forward Jamil Wilson was one of six players named to the All-Big East Second Team.

Here's the full list of the preseason all-conference teams:

Big East Preseason Player Of The Year: Doug McDermott, Creighton

All-Big East Honorable Mention:

Kadeem Batts, Providence
Chris Obekpa, St. John's

There's six players on the second team, as there was a tie in the voting somewhere.

So, let's look at how our predictions shook out!

Preseason POY? Check. I didn't bother trying to figure out who the preseason Rookie of the Year would be. There's just too many moving parts there. Plus, who really wants to name a "best rookie" before he's even played a game?

Unfortunately, only four out of the five first team predictions were correct. I had D`Angelo Harrison out due to his suspension to end last season and JaKarr Sampson in. I'll accept that switch within the Red Storm lineup, especially since Sampson made it onto the second team. Two of the players I considered for the first team, Edwin and Batts, also showed up on the list, so nice job by me.

Your thoughts on the list? Pipe up in the comments if you think someone was left out!

It's yet another kickoff event as we get closer and closer to the start of the season!

For the first time, men's and women's basketball will be having Media Day from the same place on the same day! The men's festivities start off at 8:30 Central, with the women's end of things coming at 12:15 pm. We already know that Buzz Williams took seniors Davante Gardner, Chris Otule, Jake Thomas, and Jamil Wilson with him to New York City. I don't believe I saw anything about anyone traveling with women's head coach Terri Mitchell, but I would expect that Katherine Plouffe made the trip.

You can check on our predictions for the men's preseason awards here, and our predictions for the women's awards are over here.

UPDATE! Marquette's women's basketball team has been picked to finish fifth in the Big East, and senior forward Katherine Plouffe has been named to the 10 player preseason all-conference team.

UPDATE! It looks like the live stream is back underway with interviews with Bob Wenzel, although they cut to the "be right back" card while they switch out interviewees.

9:32 am - Jamil Wilson on the live stream! He says he saw high schoolers at the elite camps he went to over the summer that told him that they were impressed with how hard MU plays.

9:51 am - I will personally give the producer or director of the live stream $5 if they start waiting until Wenzel is set to go with the new interviewee before going back to live mics and live cameras.

10:40 am - Providence head coach Ed Cooley says he's lost 80 pounds. Nice job by him! Also, shout out to the producer/director of the live stream, as they actually jumped into the Cooley interview a second or two late, which is preferable to coming in 15 seconds early.

10:43 am - Cooley's encouraging Bryce Cotton to take more shots. "His bad shots are other people's good shots."

11:14 am - St. John's head coach says the Big East is the place to be if you have a basketball jones. Is Coach Lav lamenting the move of TBJ to The Starters on NBA TV? Also: What, no Mrs. Coach Lav at media day?

1:21 pm - Back with women's basketball's end of things, I have an update to the women's awards. Junior guard Arlesia Morse is one of three players to pick up a preseason Honorable Mention nod.

1:49 pm - Marquette's own Katie Young gets a crack at an interview on the live stream!

We'll keep this page up to date with any cool or interesting news coming out of New York all day long, so keep checking back! If you see anything that catches your eye, be sure to bring it up in the comments section!
